Cork Flooring Transitions Explained: T-Moldings, Reducers, Stair Nosings & End Caps

Choosing the correct transition molding is one of the most important parts of a successful cork flooring installation. Every week we receive calls from customers asking:

  • Do I need a T-Molding or a Reducer?

  • Can you make a matching transition piece?

  • Can cork flooring connect to carpet?

  • What transition should I use for stairs?

This guide will help you choose the right molding for your project.

Understanding Floor Transitions

A transition molding is used where cork flooring meets another surface. The type of molding required depends on:

  • The flooring material on each side

  • Whether the two floors are the same height

  • Whether the transition is located at a doorway, stairway, fireplace, or exterior door

Using the correct transition not only improves appearance but also protects the flooring and allows proper expansion and contraction.

T-Molding: For Floors at the Same Height

A T-Molding is designed for two hard surface floors that are approximately the same height.Autumn Leaves – T-Molding (900mm Long) (TAL12) (Special Order) - Transition flooring detail view

Typical applications include:

  • Cork flooring to hardwood

  • Cork flooring to engineered wood

  • Cork flooring to laminate

  • Cork flooring to luxury vinyl plank (LVP)

  • Cork flooring to tile of similar thickness

The top of the molding forms a “T” shape that covers the expansion gap between the two floors.

Custom Color-Matched T-Moldings

We offer custom-made T-Moldings for many of our cork flooring colors.

Each T-Molding is manufactured from the flooring material you purchase, providing the closest possible match to your floor.Salami – 1/2 Inch (12mm) – Cork Floating T-Molding (900mm Long) (TSal12) (Special Order) - Transition flooring detail ...

Please note:

  • T-Moldings are special-order products.

  • Production typically requires approximately 2 weeks.

  • The molding ships together with your flooring order unless separate shipping arrangements are requested.

Why We Do Not Recommend T-Moldings for Carpet

Many customers ask whether they can use a T-Molding between cork flooring and carpet.

In most cases, the answer is no.

T-Moldings work best when both sides of the transition are rigid flooring materials. Carpet requires a different type of transition designed to secure the carpet edge properly.

For cork-to-carpet installations, we recommend purchasing a carpet transition strip from a local flooring supplier. PVC, aluminum, or carpet-specific transition systems are usually the best solution.

Reducers: For Different Floor Heights

A reducer is used when one floor is higher than the adjacent floor.

For example:

  • Cork flooring to lower tile

  • Cork flooring to concrete

  • Cork flooring to lower hardwood

  • Cork flooring to lower vinyl flooring

A reducer creates a gradual slope between the two surfaces, reducing trip hazards and providing a smooth transition.

Can We Make a Matching Cork Reducer?

Unfortunately, no.

Our floating cork flooring products range from approximately 9.5mm to 12mm thick. This thickness is sufficient for manufacturing custom T-Moldings but not enough to produce a durable reducer profile.

Because of this limitation, we do not offer custom-made cork reducers.

Recommended Solution

Take your flooring sample to a local hardwood or flooring store and select a reducer profile that fits your specific height difference.

Many customers then:

  • Choose a matching wood species.

  • Select a complementary color.

  • Have the reducer stained by a local finishing company.

An exact color match is often difficult to achieve, but a complementary color can create an attractive and professional appearance.

Stair Nosings

Stair nosings are required whenever cork flooring is installed on stairs or stair landings.

The nosing protects the exposed edge of the flooring while creating a safer walking surface.

Like our T-Moldings, stair nosings are custom-made and require approximately 2 weeks for manufacturing.

Because they are produced specifically for each order, inventory is limited and advance planning is recommended.

End Caps

An end cap is used where cork flooring ends against a fixed object.

Common applications include:

  • Sliding glass doors

  • Patio doors

  • Fireplace hearths

  • Built-in cabinetry

  • Floor-to-ceiling windows

End caps provide a clean finished edge while maintaining the necessary expansion space for floating floors.

End caps are available by special request. If you require an end cap, please contact our customer service team for assistance.

Can I Order Samples of Moldings?

We do not provide color samples of T-Moldings or stair nosings because these products are custom manufactured.

However, customers frequently want to see the profile shape before ordering.

If you are ordering flooring samples, simply add the following note:

“Please include a molding profile sample.”

We can include a sample piece showing the shape and construction of a T-Molding or stair nosing.

Please note that the sample color will not match your flooring selection. It is intended only to demonstrate the profile design.

Shipping Options

Ship Everything Together

Most customers choose to order flooring and moldings together.

Benefits include:

  • One shipment

  • Lower shipping costs

  • Everything arrives at the same time

The tradeoff is that the flooring shipment must wait for the custom moldings to be manufactured.

Ship Flooring Immediately

If you need your flooring quickly, you may place separate orders.

Benefits include:

  • Flooring can ship immediately

  • Installation can begin sooner

Additional shipping charges may apply when moldings are shipped separately.
